The Frost Problem: Why Freezers Fail
In cold storage facilities, energy efficiency is everything. Yet, a common and expensive problem plagues many warehouses: frost build-up around the doorway.
Frost doesn't just make the floor slippery (a major safety hazard); it means your expensive cold air is escaping, and warm, humid air is entering. This causes ice to form on the curtains, the hardware, and the floor.
The root cause is almost always improper installation of the PVC curtains. Standard PVC curtains or incorrectly hung Polar curtains will warp, crack, and fail to seal in sub-zero temperatures.
Here is the professional field guide to installing Polar PVC Curtains to create a perfect, frost-free thermal barrier.
Phase 1: Pre-Installation Preparation
Before you drill any holes, verify your materials and environment.
◆Verify the Material: Ensure you are installing true Polar Grade PVC (rated for -40°C / -40°F). Standard PVC will become brittle and shatter upon impact in a freezer.
◆Check the Overlap: For freezers, a 66% overlap is mandatory. A 50% overlap leaves microscopic gaps where warm air can pass and create ice.
◆Temperature Acclimation: If your Polar curtains were shipped from a warm warehouse, do not install them immediately. Let them sit inside the cold storage room (or a chilled staging area) for at least 24 hours. Installing cold PVC that has been rolled up warm will cause it to warp and curl permanently.
Phase 2: The 5-Step Installation Protocol
Follow this sequence strictly to ensure a tight, airtight seal.
Step 1: Install the Heavy-Duty Hardware
Freezer environments are harsh. Do not use standard plastic brackets. Use stainless steel rails or heavy-duty aluminum tracks to prevent rust and cold-snapping. Ensure the rail is mounted perfectly level; even a slight angle will cause the strips to slide and bunch up on one side.
Step 2: Hang from the Center Outwards
Start with the center strip. This establishes your symmetry.
◆Hook the strip and ensure it hangs perfectly vertical.
◆Work outward, alternating left and right.
◆Field Tip: To achieve the 66% overlap, the distance between the S-hooks on your rail must be exactly one-third of the strip's total width. (e.g., For a 300mm wide strip, space the hooks 100mm apart).
Step 3: Adjust the Ground Clearance (The "Frost Gap")
This is the most critical step for preventing frost.
◆The bottom of the PVC strips must not touch the floor.
◆Leave a clearance of 2cm to 5cm (approx. 1 to 2 inches).
◆If the strips drag on the floor, the cold air will freeze any ambient moisture, gluing the strips to the floor. When a forklift passes, it will rip the curtain or the hardware.
Step 4: Seal the Top and Sides
Warm air often leaks from the top and edges of the doorway. Ensure the mounting brackets are tight against the wall. If there are large gaps on the sides, consider adding a fixed PVC side panel or aluminum flashing to seal the perimeter.
Step 5: Verify the "Drop Test"
Before declaring the job done, manually pull back a few strips and let them go. They should fall back smoothly and snap into the overlap position without curling or sticking.
Field Troubleshooting: Why Frost Still Forms
Even with a good installation, frost can appear. Here is how to diagnose it:
Symptom: Ice is forming on the S-hooks at the top.
Diagnosis: Warm, humid air is hitting the cold metal hardware.
Fix: Check the top gap. You may need to install a top cover or a header seal above the rail.
Symptom: The strips are curling inward at the bottom.
Diagnosis: This is "Cold Flow" or material degradation. The plasticizers in the PVC have migrated out, or the material is not true Polar Grade.
Fix: Check the supplier. You need a premium formulation that resists cold-flow (like those manufactured by Baoding Yashen).
Symptom: The strips are sticking together and won't separate.
Diagnosis: Excessive humidity in the room or plasticizer migration causing surface tackiness.
Fix: Clean the edges with a mild PVC-safe cleaner. If it persists, the curtain's formula is failing and needs replacement.
The Baoding Yashen Advantage
At Baoding Yashen Technology Co., Ltd., we don't just sell plastic; we engineer cold-chain solutions.
Because we control the entire production line-from the PVC resin and plasticizers to the final extrusion-we can guarantee that our Polar PVC Strip Curtains maintain their flexibility down to -40°C. They are formulated with special cold-resistant plasticizers and UV stabilizers to prevent frost-related cracking.
