I work in the PVC sheet business. Every week, someone asks me: "How much does a PVC sheet weigh per square meter?"
The honest answer is: it depends. There's no single number. A thin film and a thick rigid panel are completely different animals. But you can get a pretty good estimate if you know the thickness, density, and what's in the sheet.
Here's what I usually tell customers.
Why the Weight Matters
Weight affects a lot more than shipping. It affects:
◆Freight cost and logistics
◆How many people you need to handle it
◆Whether your structure can support it
◆Installation method
◆Cutting and fabrication
If you're ordering a large quantity, even a small difference in weight per square meter adds up fast.
What Changes the Weight
Thickness
This is the biggest factor. Double the thickness, and you roughly double the weight. A 0.5mm sheet is not going to weigh the same as a 2mm sheet.
Density
PVC density varies by formulation. Rigid PVC is usually denser than soft, plasticized PVC. But that's not always true-some heavily filled sheets can be heavier than you expect.
Additives and Fillers
Stabilizers, plasticizers, pigments, flame retardants, and fillers all change the weight. Calcium carbonate is a common filler. It makes the sheet heavier and cheaper, but it also changes performance.
Surface Finish
Textured or embossed sheets can be slightly heavier because of the extra material. Smooth sheets are usually a bit lighter. The difference is small, but it exists.
Typical Weight Ranges
These are the ranges I see most often. Your supplier's numbers may vary, so always confirm before ordering.

Thin PVC film 0.1–0.5mm 100–500 g/m²
Flexible PVC sheet 0.5–3mm 500 g–3 kg/m²
Rigid PVC sheet 3–20mm 3–20 kg/m²
Specialized PVC sheet Varies; depends on formulation
A few real-world examples:
0.2mm clear PVC film: around 200–250 g/m²
1mm flexible PVC sheet: around 1–1.5 kg/m²
5mm rigid PVC sheet: around 5–6 kg/m²
If you're looking at a Crystal PVC Transparent Soft Tablecloth or a Frosted PVC Soft Sheet , those usually fall into the flexible range. A Transparent PVC Table Cover might be thinner and lighter.
How to Calculate It Yourself
You can get a rough number with this formula:
Weight (kg/m²) = Thickness (mm) × Density (g/cm³)
Example: a 2mm PVC sheet with a density of 1.3 g/cm³
2 × 1.3 = 2.6 kg/m²
That's a simplified formula. It doesn't account for every additive or surface finish. If you need an exact figure, ask your supplier for the actual density of that specific sheet.
Questions I Get All the Time
"How much does a 1mm transparent PVC table cover weigh?"
Usually around 1.2–1.5 kg/m². But if it's heavily plasticized, it could be lighter. If it's filled, it could be heavier.
"Is rigid PVC always heavier than flexible PVC?"
Not always. It depends on the formulation. Rigid PVC is usually denser, but some flexible sheets with heavy fillers can surprise you.
"Does the color affect the weight?"
Not really. Pigments are a tiny fraction of the total weight. Thickness and filler content matter much more.
"Can I use the thickness alone to estimate weight?"
Only as a rough guide. Two sheets with the same thickness can have different densities. That's why I always ask for the supplier's actual spec.
Why I Tell Customers to Check Before They Buy
I've seen projects go wrong because someone assumed a sheet would weigh less. Then they had to redo the support structure, or they blew their freight budget.
If you're ordering a large volume, ask for:
◆Thickness
◆Density
◆Weight per square meter
◆Roll or sheet size
◆Tolerance
Those five numbers will save you a lot of headaches.
